What is the true meaning of life?
Numerous philosophers have pondered this question for millennia, and many believe that the answer is enigmatic and that it is up to each individual to discover his or her own purpose. Some individuals are even of the opinion that life has no meaning. The objective of this article is to guide your thoughts in order to help you discover the one and only true purpose of your existence. The key to finding happiness in any circumstance is to give your life meaning, regardless of how difficult life may be.
Man is a created being, just like the rest of the things we can perceive. As a result, man is unable to understand the meaning of his existence on this planet. A person's mind is limited in its ability to comprehend the bigger picture of existence, so even if he uses all of his mental capacity to attempt to find the real answers to the question of why he exists, he will only be able to come up with a subjective purpose for himself. Therefore, in order to find out what his role in the universe is, man needs to return to the one who created him, i.e., the Creator, Allah (Read the Evidence of the Creator's existence article).
As a means toward achieving this goal, the Qur'an has been established as the exclusive source of guidance for mankind from the Creator. It is only possible for the Creator of the universe to disclose the ultimate meaning of life in his book of guidance, i.e., the Qur'an.
In His revelation to mankind, Allah (s.w.t) emphasised that:
“ And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (Quran, 51:56).
The ayah reveals that Allah created both men and the jinns to worship Him (s.w.t). To worship Allah means acknowledging that He is Lord. As a result, the closer a Muslim gets to Allah, the more he or she understands what life is all about.
Additionally to what has been stated thus far, this existence is a training ground for the Hereafter, where all individuals will eventually dwell. Consequently, according to the teachings of the Quran, Muslims must submit to the Creator's commandments in all aspects of their lives.
Also, Allah (s.w.t) enlightens us with the realities of this life and commands that we do not succumb to this life's transient pleasures:
“Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children – like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.” (Quran 57:20)
In a nutshell, Allah has instructed humanity to worship him and seek His pleasure in all that they do. The Qur'an is the only source of guidance that explains both the ultimate meaning of existence as well as the reality of this life on earth.
